Accessibility: Part of My Purpose

As an experience designer, I’ve always been drawn to the idea that everyone should be able to interact with the interfaces we create. But beyond design, my passion for accessibility is deeply personal. Throughout my life, I’ve witnessed how misconceptions about physical or cognitive disabilities can limit people—not just in their personal lives, but in their opportunities to grow, contribute, and be recognized.

I’ve also seen how many people want to help but don’t know how, or how to design solutions that allow others to live more autonomous and empowered lives. Accessibility became both an opportunity and a responsibility for me—as a product creator, a leader, and a human being. It challenged me to create digital spaces where no one is left behind, to break biases around ability, and to recognize that all of us—regardless of our health or abilities—move through changing stages of need. Our bodies and minds evolve, and we all rely on tools, systems, and support to thrive and participate fully.

Putting Accessibility Into Practice

My journey as an accessibility strategist began in 2016 at Accenture in Monterrey, Mexico, where I introduced inclusive design into internal training and delivery practices. I built programs for designers, developers, and QA teams—shifting the conversation from compliance to meaningful impact, and helping teams understand how accessibility drives better digital experiences for everyone.

When I joined Avanade in Toronto, I saw an opportunity to scale this work globally. With the rise of remote work during the pandemic, the need for accessible and inclusive experiences became urgent across regions and business lines. I co-founded and led Avanade’s global Accessibility & Inclusive Design Community, building the strategy, playbooks, and enablement resources that helped teams embed accessibility from discovery through delivery.

As an accessibility evangelist and design leader, I drove inclusive thinking across product, engineering, sales, and brand—bringing accessibility to the heart of our ecosystem. Partnering with Microsoft and Avanade’s Inclusion, Diversity, and Well-being teams, we reimagined internal tools and ways of working. I led the development of a cross-regional accessibility roadmap, championed compliance (ADA, Section 508, AODA), and empowered teams through coaching and usability audits—ultimately helping Avanade earn recognition as one of North America's Best Places to Work for People with Disabilities in 2024.

Beyond the organization, I’ve shared this expertise through talks at A11yTO and Microsoft Reactor, consulted with mid-sized companies to improve accessibility, and moderated panels on inclusive innovation—amplifying diverse perspectives from Latin American, European, and North American communities. My work supports not only inclusive design practices, but also accessible business operations and day-to-day mindsets.

My work with Avanade earned recognition I’m deeply grateful for:

  • North America Rising Leader Award (2023) for advancing accessibility and inclusion across the company.

  • Future Human Leader Nomination (2024) by TLC Lions in New York, for my contributions to inclusive digital transformation.

Looking Forward

Today, I work as a consultant helping companies build inclusive products, services, and operations. My focus is on creating barrier-free ecosystems where accessibility is foundational—not an afterthought.

I also integrate ethical design practices that consider privacy, security, AI, and sustainability—ensuring solutions are both human-centred and responsible.

Whether I’m designing, mentoring, or advising, my goal remains the same: to create spaces where people feel seen, supported, and able to thrive.

Accessibility touches all of us—through every change in our bodies, minds, and the world around us. It’s a part of life, and it should feel that way for everyone.
